Philip Pettett

Searching for the parentage of Elijah Pettett (Pettit) of Spartanburg, South Carolina, whom some say is the son of Benjamin Pettit of Spartanburg; further research is necessary however, as no documentation has surfaced confirming this fact. Some say that Benjamin was married twice and that Elijah is the result of that first marriage. Please refer to my chart on the Pettetts for a listing of Elijah's children.

Shown left is Philip Wayne Pettett, great grandson of Elias Pettett.

Elias Pettett and four of his sons served in the 52nd Regiment of the Georgia Infantry, CSA. David Allen Landsdown, Jr. and his brother, A.J. Landsdown served in the Tate Guards, Pickens Co., GA, CSA, Army of Tennessee.

Some of Perry's brothers spelled the name Pettit(t) while Perry and his descendants spelled it Pettett! Perry married Billie Louisa Landsdown, daughter of David Allen Landsdown.

David Allen Landsdown was a man of means who went to North Georgia in the early 1800s with his 1st wife, probably named Martha, last name unknown. She died about 1837 and he married Juliann Martin, believed to be the daughter of William Martin of Georgia, further research is necessary to document this fact. Landsdown went by the name of ALLEN and was a member of the Georgia State Legislature in 1837; he was an Ensign in the Georgia Militia. Landsdown was born about 1801/2 in Wilkes County, NC and appears to be the son of Clary Landsdown, daughter of William Landsdown. A note of interest, Landsdown's property in Tate, GA, is across the road from the Pink Marble Mansion built by the Tate family and it consisted of 700 acres; the house burned in 1898. See the Tate link below.

At some point, some of the family moved to Copperhill, Tennessee, where one of their sons, Levi Jackson Pettett, worked for the Tennessee Corporation.

My father, Philip Pettett, recorded the audio in the 70s and up to his death in June of 1985! In researching our lineage, David Allen Landsdown was his g, grandfather, not Jack Landsdown; Jack was his g uncle. Also, the Walter he mentioned, was actually John Walter PETTETT, son of Perry & Billie Pettett who went to Oklahoma. The man whom he referred to as being killed at Appomattox was David Allen Landsdown, Jr. Further proof is necessary to confirm his death in Virginia.
